Obesity has become a problem of epidemic proportions in the United States. Poor nutrition choices, lack of exercise and a whole host of other factors contribute to what is becoming one of the greatest health threats of our time. Everything from high cholesterol to the dangers it poses to diabetes and a shortened lifespan, along with countless other ills, has been laid at the feet of obesity. As much attention as the media has given this subject in recent years, the American lifestyle simply does not make it easy to make the necessary changes for better health.
The purpose of asking for these stories is to provide encouragement and inspiration to millions of other people out there who are battling their own personal struggles with weight loss and improved health. With perseverance, strength of will and determination, it can be done. The stories that are seen in People Magazine’s “Half Their Size” issue always proves this.
The second purpose in providing weight loss success stories is to showcase the importance of understanding that these successful people each had their own individual journey with their own challenges. One person may have struggled with poor nutrition choices constantly being in front of their face because their family may not have been watching what they were eating. Another person may have experienced depression and found comfort in poor food choices. Yet another still may have been intimidated by the local gym and would talk themselves out of going. Another may have been experiencing hormonal changes as they got older and, no matter what they did in terms of diet and/or exercise, the weight simply would not come off. All of these things could contribute to discouragement and feelings of hopelessness. All of these stories are commonly heard and decidedly human.
Another purpose of the weight loss success stories is to show readers that there is no “one size fits all” approach to what will work and what will not. Every person is different and requires their own individualized approach to a healthier lifestyle. The overweight 25-year-old woman will face a different challenge than an overweight 50-year-old menopausal woman. Their paths will be different. One person will find success in cutting back calories and getting a little light exercise in their routine. Another will find that drinking more water than they have before while hitting the spinning class at the local gym is the golden combination. Yet another will find that they have a sugar addiction and, by cutting it out of her daily food choices, it can be life-changing.
But, regardless of the individual paths these people took to get to “Half Their Size”, they all possessed the same traits. They were all determined and driven by their own needs. They were all faced with their own challenges, looked them in the face and persevered. They all had days where they slipped, reverted back to poor choices, and then got back on track. They all set goals and obtained them.
The human stories of the people who have lost half their size will resonate with readers and provide great encouragement and inspiration for all of the people who look to embark on their own weight loss journey.
