Holy cow - I lost 5.5 lbs. this week!!

Note to self: no matter how much of a pain it is - USE THE FOODTRACKER!!!

Even tho I didn't use it everyday, or get it all perfect, just the fact that it makes me THINK about choices more and choose more wisely, has helped alot.

Cut out late night sugar, cut out chips, cut back processed foods. Ate alot more steamed or roasted veggies, lean meats, protein shakes w/fruit. Drank more water (I squeeze a lemon wedge of juice in a bottle of water, then drop the wedge in the bottle, add 1 packet of stevia in the raw).

yay me!

See what actually seeing some weight loss results does for me? Motivates me to keep up with it - not slack off on the weekend.
I had cheat meal last night, so I'm done. Cheat meal was chicken/beef fajitas in 2 flour tortillas w/2% shredded cheese. Mexican rice w/butter. Tortilla chips w/red and green sauce dip. And a Snickers Dark chocolate candy bar. yum!
Def not paleo (not that I am hardcore paleo or anything, but I do try to follow along somewhat with the dietary choices of paleo) with the cheese and the flour tortillas and rice & chips, and especially the candy bar - but that's what a cheat meal is....allowing a little slack in the usual nutrition plan.

Back to healthy choices.Off to a good start for a Saturday breakfast.

Breakfast: Vanilla Whey protein shake w/fresh kiwi (1/2 of a kiwi fruit), green apple (1/4 of a green apple), 1/2 cup frozen blueberries 1/2 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup coconut water

will add more as I get there.

continued meals for the day:

Lunch: pb & j on ww rounds
snack: popcorn w/butter & salt (went to the movies with son :D )
Dinner: Beef tacos w/fresh homemade guacamole w/cilantro, onion, tomato, avocado - yum!

no workout today or yesterday. Been suffering from some pretty intense lower back pain. yesterday was just about unbearable, but today was better. I think I may have hurt it when I was trying to do cable lifted deadlift using the cable row station. I attached a small bar to the cable row line and then pulled up just like I would a weighted bar - but I think I overdid it when I upped the weight to 90lbs. - highest so far had been 65lbs. I only did 6 reps at that higher weight, but have had recurrent pain ever since. Think it may be a pinched nerve.

If no pain tomorrow then I will go for a run. I really want to keep this recent weight loss momentum going, and exercising is an important part of that.

hope you feel better. Back pain is the worst!! i was doing an exercise on p90x 2 years ago and i used a heavier weight and i strained something too. The pain for me lasted actually about 2 or 3 weeks. pretty uncomfortable and miserable! But hopefully you don't have it that long!! never bothered me after that though. take care! :)

Your cheat meal sounds amazing! That's a good one. It reminds me of what I had tonight, a burger with fries and a deep fried mars bar ;)

Have you tried Good Mornings with a broom handle or something to work on your lower back? I could try to find a video that might help, but I have a feeling you've done them before.

Been AWOL from journal lately - but still staying on track for the most part.

I really am liking smoothies I make for breakfast. Getting very creative with ingredients.
So far fav is 1/2 banana, 1/2 scoop vanilla whey powder, 1 cup unsweet almond milk, 1 tbsp. all natl PB, handful baby spinach, 2 strawberries, 1/4 cup blueberries, shake or two of cinnamon.

I've done interval HIIT work 3 days in a row this week. Total of 12 miles for the week so far. :D

I'm sad that I can't do any weight lifting AT ALL. back is still not 100%. I lifted a box today at work, moved it about 6 ft. to another table and back has ached ever since. The box only weighed about 10 - 15 lbs. :x ( face after I lifted that box)
I am not used to being limited. Kinda worried how I will keep arm muscle and back muscle without lifting or even bodyweight exercises. I'm scared to try a plank.
Last week I tried some "girl" pushups on knees - didn't seem to bother it much, but I only did a few.

Injury and age related limitations are a hard pill to swallow. If you are young, healthy without any major medical or physical issues TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS TIME IN YOUR LIFE, work hard, be fit, be strong - it will help you when you are older.

Do whatever you can.

Seated Shoulder work, standing dumbell Bicep work, Tricep Pressdowns, Leg Extensions, Hamstring Machine etc.

If you're savvy you can work around this and do certain things, that will help you not to lose more muscle condition from all over the body, you can help yourself somewhat and help yourself to burn added calories and reduce fat gain that some level of inactivity would cause.

As long as you can perform certain exercsies weight free and have a full range of motion, then you are able to experiment with small amounts of weight you can increase it by bit until you find what you are able to do right now on a given exercise. If something starts to be felt, drop back to the weight below and work within the threashold.

Next time you train, do that little bit more and if it's okay try a bit more. If that fails stick to the little bit extra. However If the little bit extra is still not quite twinge free, stick to what you intially discovered you could work with on that exercise.

Train smart with this, don't necessarily train non-existently, because it's a mild back issue not a broken Leg, so you can work around it by being clever and conservative and don't be afraid of doing anything, because anything is better than nothing and will help with weight control and mindset. If you're in the gym doing something, it will keep the mind stronger, reduce the fear of getting back into the serious stuff and keep you hungry for the serious stuff again, because you can look at the equipment you are not able to use and and get fired up for when you can use it again.

You are not perhaps as durable as you were, in that old running picture aged 17, but you're not a total wreck misses, you're a pretty awesome Lady with decent physical conditioning now. You're strong, fitter and more knowledgeale about what to do and how to do it, so you don't need to worry, you just need to train smart and sensibly and do whatever you can, to stop the weight creeping back up and keep the precious strength you've strived for for months now.

I believe in this, as I've had one or two niggles before, but nothing serious, but in other respects, when you've got stitches in a hand from an accidental blade injury, or you've got a swollen ankle from slipping down some stairs, you could let these things affect you, but by being clever about things, you can still carry on and do things, until you're able to go pretty much as full on as you did before.

I'm sending you a BIG PAT ON THE BACK, because I am proud of you for the care and attention you have been giving your body. You have really young looks, or youthfully mature as it could be called, you look quite beautiful and you're a really lovely Lady with a great heart and a lot of humanity and inner beauty and I know this issue must be frustrating and may feel like a reality check regards age, but you're a long time from the last few years misses, you can believe that as much as you want to and at times like this, it tells you something about the strength of heart, mind and character, how you let it affect you, or how you work within fluctuating limitations.

You'll get over this back issue, but you'll be stronger for it, by not letting it ruin some of your hard worked for progress, fitness and mindset. Be strong, be brave, be sensible and be you and let this issue fuel the fire and give you a reason to come back, stronger and striving for more, because you're not at your peak and you can still do more with a 50 year old body, to be stronger, fitter and more acocomplished and you've run races and treated your body with a lot more respect in recent years than some do and now that knowledge and trust in your body can be two great bedfellows and you won't let yourself down and make things worse if you approach this situation in the right way(s).

GOOD LUCK and if you need to talk, PM me anytime. I am really proud of you and should be proud of yourself too, you've pushed yourself so hard and even more so in the past 12 months and deserve the health you have created for yourself. I want to be like you in 14 years. I want to still be giving it best and still working towards being as close to the physical happiness I have now as possible, when I'm old.

I don't live up to you, but I admire you and respect you a lot Lynne.and I want you to overcome this back problem and continue to learn more, get stronger and be even better, because you are SO WORTH IT and if you get clever, this back problem doesn't have to sideline you complletely, it may merely be a piece of education and a trifling crimp in your execution of workouts.

Chin up, be strong and best wishes and THANK YOU for your constant messages, humanity and community spirit. You are beautiful and every inch a true Lady and friend to all of us, so I'm speaking to you as not just a moderator, but a friend and supporter of yours :).

Now go to the gym and kick some sort of butt okay . Trust me, you'll thank me in some way for this, when you're doing something instead of nothing and it feels great just be active in some way, not inactive and worrying about when and how you'll get back into it and I'm hoping to see you in another 12 months, coming here and tellng us you're hitting 25% more weight at least and you're down a good 20lbs more at least and another 5% fat at least, so I'm giving you a very doable reason to work it misses okay :).

You CAN do this and you CAN start to be active again in certain ways and then when your back is 100% again, push on and become even more awesome. You could have at least another 50 years of life left for you yet, so make them great and live them well, because as I said before, YOU ARE WORTH IT :) :).

Be good to yourself and keep on believing, because you are not old and your heart is still very young and always spectacular :).

smoothies sound great!!! do you like the unsweetened almond milk? does it taste good or like milk? I was thinking of buying it but didn't want to because i was afraid it wouldn't taste good.

It's only been a few weeks, wait and see on the muscle tone!! I think when i hurt back it took 3 weeks and i was in a LOT of pain. Now it's fine though.

Great Advice Lynne!!

Oh maaaaannn! I'm really sorry to hear about your back. Is swimming an option? I'm trying to think of something safe that will maintain - and even build more - strength. Even slow lengths of front crawl with resistance paddles on your hands would be good. Bare hands would work well too, I'm trying to think of how to add resistance without impact.

Not exercising while your body heals is smart - don't push it. Take your time. This makes your unprocessed nutrition challenge even more important! You can control that at least.

Thanks for the suggestions Boss I hadn't thought of seated DB work! I've been so upset and depressed over back problem. :(

Thank you!!

I hope so Boss Man. I have always felt that I haven't reached peak yet - best race is still out there, best fitness is still to come, it's gonna happen, I won't stop til it does. :D

Okay.....this is probably THE MOST AWESOME thing I have ever read in the 3 years I've been here. Thank you so much Boss Man for the pep talk and the words of encouragement - you have no idea how much it means to me.

Yes, I love it! son loves it too. We use it just like normal milk.

I hadn't thought of that either! That is a great idea. Resistance without impact. Love it. Thank you so much!

I'm dealing with alot of emotional urges to eat badly. Being down and getting upset over limitations is a perfect breeding ground for dietary disaster. I'm handling it as best i can, trying to recognize when I am about to make a unhealthy choice and deal with it.

I so hear you on that, Lynne! Stay tough as best as you can. You're stronger than that kind of stuff. Every treat counts - that's what I learned in 4 week challenge. I thought those little things weren't adding up, but they really were, so every time you decide not to do it, you're really doing yourself a huge favour. I would almost count every time you want to cheat and don't, a workout ;) I don't know if that helps you, but it helped me. TGIF, and take care!

Took a week off - trying to rest back and get over whatever ails it.

Made the most delicious smoothie this morning for pre-workout breakfast

1 cup unsweet almond milk
1/2 banana
frozen peaches (about 3 slices)
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1 tbsp all natural pb
1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1/2 cup crushed ice

Yummm!!!

drank half before the workout and half after the workout

lunch was a pb& j sandwich on ww rounds with chips  (bad, I know) and a handful of dark chocolate covered raisins (if these are bad - don't tell me....they were so good!!!)

workout today was
4 grueling treadmill miles - mixed it up with some intervals of increased speed. Sweated buckets, felt tired and awesome at the same time.
25 "girl" pushups
25 second plank (being very careful with back) - was shaking like a newborn baby!!! wow, core has gotten weak!!
10 incline pushups
No back pain as of yet. >fingers crossed< :|

That sentence on the changes you made to achieve the 5 lbs loss will help a lot of folks who read it. workplace is starting a 30 Day Paleo Challenge on Sept 4 and I thought of you! I know you're not calling it Paleo, but it sort of involves the same stuff, right? You're doing so well! Good work with the tracking.

Keep at it girl - and great smoothie recommendation. I tried it with almond butter and it rocked world a bit.

Yeah it is not quite hardcore paleo, but I try to apply the basic principles of paleo. And use the 80/20 ratio. I don't drink milk - I switched to unsweet almond milk (love), I gave up cheese (except for on occasion) I don't flour and fry anything anymore. I steam or roast fresh or frozen veggies, using garlic seasonings and a little evoo.
weak spots are chips, and a late night sweet tooth. When i conquer those two things - even for one day, I feel like I won a major battle.
Another thing I have worked hard to give up is those drink sticks you buy to put in bottled water. I got very addicted to the "energy" ones which are loaded with caffiene. They are all loaded with all kinds of things I can't even pronounce. It's a HUGE market for women, I've noticed. Being tricked into drinking more water by pouring this crap in it to make it taste better. I am trying to change that. I now buy lemons, squeeze a bit in a bottle of water, add 1 packet of stevia for a bit of sweetness. You would be amazed at the difference it makes. Saves $ too!!
Athene wrote:Keep at it girl - and great smoothie recommendation. I tried it with almond butter and it rocked world a bit.
I have almond butter - but I REALLY love peanut butter (totally NOT paleo  ) I may try it with the almond butter and use less almond milk. But it will be hard for me to give up all natural pb. That's one of those foods that I beg to differ with on paleo! I'm like..."come on....dont' take pb!!!"....I gave up cheese for pete's sake!!!! Let me have pb!!
