Using Coconut oil

Post by Somendra »

Can anyone tell me if coconut oil is a better substitute to other oils for cooking? Currently I am using EVOO to sauté greens. I heard it contains fat and I am afraid I may get fatty as I am already looking to lose some weight for which I have started to go to the gym since last week. :(

Coconut oil has a very good heat stability / smoke point. Yes it's not quite as good as olive oil, but it is good and the fats in it are saturates, but not the usual kind.

The MCT's, (Medium Chain Triglycerides), lauric acid, caprylic acid and caproic acid, actually convert to energy in the liver, so they are perfectly fine for you.

Yes. Whereas, the fats that the body stores are long-chain triglycerides, coconut oil is more readily converted into energy.

I have also read that coconut oil is great for improving memory and brain function. I'm not sure if it was in Mens Health or Muscle and Performance magazine, but studies were performed that proved that taking a tablespoon of coconut oil before an exam actually improved memory recall. Furthermore this has led scientists to conclude that coconut oil may delay or prevent Alzheimers disease. Although, research in this field is just beginning.
