Sparkling water... is it good for you?

Post by Driveshaft815 »

I cut out soda completely, and since have been drinking just regular water and a lot of "Sparkling Clear Water" from local grocery store. They're cheap at only $.79 for a liter of the stuff, and they taste great. Helped ween me off of soda.

I'm just curious though... is it any better for me than soda? Or is it basically just diet soda? There's no sodium, sugar, or calories in the water. The ingredients in it are...

Carbonated water
Citric acid
Natural flavor
Aspartame
Potassium citrate
Potassium Benzoate (preservative)
Malic acid

Some people would complain about the aspartame, but is isn't the same as it doesn't have things like acesulfame-k and phosphoric acid, which is a substance than can erode the quality of teeth over time.

I admit to not knowing anything about the acesulfame-k.

However you might be as well just to buy still water. You can always get the ones that have a very slight fruit flavouring in them, as I doubt there's anything wrong with those.

I tend to be scared to drink anything with aspartame listed in the ingredients. It is a fake sweetener, if I remember correctly, and has been linked to everything from worsened pms and cellulite to heart disease.

Honestly, sparkling water in moderation is probably better for you than a lot of things you could be drinking. If it doesn't irritate your bladder, then having some as a treat now and then is fine. I have cystitis (easily irritated bladder), which is painful if I drink too much carbonated stuff. However, sometimes on a hot day when I've been good or tummy feels a little weird, I just have to have some ginger ale or diet soda of some kind. Actually, you may switch to diet ginger ale, provided it is made with real ginger and not just mixed coke and sprite. Ginger actually has some health benefits to be reaped.

Or you could cut all "treat" drinks and replace them with green tea or other herbal teas sweetened with honey or agave nectar. It is better for you and more natural. Also, you could try sticking a pitcher of water in the fridge with some fruit in it like lime to have fresh, flavored water. Another option would be to blend up some fruit like melon, then freeze as ice cubes. Or you could make your own popsicles. Any of this would be better than the carbonated stuff with the artificial ingredients and chemicals.
