Hi guys,
I am overweight, and started to work out, but when I am doing situps (crunches), the front of neck (like the throat area tightens up and so is chest.. Is this normal?
Keep in mind I have a sedentary lifestyle and just started to work out..

Hi Daiten, good to speak with you.
No this does not sound normal and it sounds like you might be compressing the trachea, esophagus or both.
I would suggest switching the exercise for something like planks instead.

Re: sit ups and neck stiffness
Hi there.
Try keeping your neck aligned with your torso. Don't pull your head up using your hands. I know it takes a little bit of concentration to do it but I think this is the proper form for a crunch.

Re: sit ups and neck stiffness
Hey daitenshiren,
I felt the same when I started doing sit ups to gain abs. coach says that the neck should not hurt during sit ups. The only part where you'll definitely feel pain is in your torso (abdominal muscles) which is normal because of contraction. Maybe you were bending your neck too much. (Remember you want abs on your abdomen not in your neck
) tip for you is to place your hands behind your ears while doing sit ups so you won't strain and push your neck. Also, I recommend half sit ups for you instead of full sit ups it's faster and effective. I hope this will help you.

Re: sit ups and neck stiffness
I find this happens sometimes when I start to get tired and sore. Like others have said just make sure that you keep your neck in line with your torso and concentrate in contracting your abs. The pain will stop it just takes a little concentration on the muscles you should be using and not the ones you start to use because you're tired. Good luck
