Hello,
I recently started doing tabata intervals (http://tabataintervals.org). Here is routine:
1. 20 seconds of burpees with pushups and jumps (knees to the chest)
2. 10 seconds of rest
3. 20 seconds of high knee skips
4. 10 seconds of rest
5. 20 seconds of mountain climbers
6. 10 seconds of rest
7. 20 seconds of jumping lunges
8. 10 seconds of rest
8. Repeat 1-8 one more time
I read somewhere that 4 minutes of tabatas equals an hour of endurance training. If that's true then doing this daily should be enough to lose weight as long as you have a normal calorie intake (2000 calories). Any thoughts on this? Will it be enough?

Re: Short workout
I can't answer in regards to the endurance versus tabata comparison, but in terms of the calories, 2,000 a day is the RDA for sedentary men, so I'd add another 300-500 in there on exercise days as it might be beneficial in terms of more fuel for energy and more nutrients to support exercise and recovery..

Re: Short workout
Endurance is a funny thing, take a cyclist and have him run a marathon and even that elite cyclist won't feel so elite. Same for the runner who tries a Century ride. Where as your tabata intervals are great for burning fat (provided you do 30 minutes including warm-up) and for conditioning ( all HITT is) it still isn't the same, your body uses energy differently with each activity. You'll get some carry over, but entirely. Also, anyone who tells you that 4 minutes of anything equals an hour of something else is blowing smoke. Each has its own value and has its own usefulness.

Re: Short workout
Tabata is an unbelievable cardio workout. I like to add it in 2 days per week to add a different intensity to schedule. Usually I'll do a 10 minute warm up before it and just go with one or two exercises.

I need to incorporate more Tabatha workouts in to training.

Tabata's great! I like to think of Tabata as "explosive" days. Recently I'm also incorporating a session of yoga on Tabata days too.Alinshop wrote: I need to incorporate more Tabatha workouts in to training.
But if you haven't tried Tabata before, here's a few tips to get started:
1.start with one exercise that you are comfortable with. I started mine with sprinting. Treadmills work. I personally don't like to incorporate too many exercises because it gets harder down the interval. At this point, you'll need to focus on the technique more.
2. get a good timer and don't count mississippi's or alligators. When you are exhausted and almost seeing stars, you'll lose track.
3. warm up and cool down. I usually spend 10 minutes before and after.
Work at your own level and see how your progress. Good luck!

Re: Short workout
Strictly speaking, if you are doing tabata intervals, you are supposed to stick to the same exercise throughout.
Or at least that was the original protocol I believe.

Re: Short workout
This actually sounds very interesting in relates to a HITT routine, I might try something like this on the days that I am not exclusively focusing on cardio to get in better shape. Just looking at this routine I can tell that it is going to kick butt though.
Re: Short workout
Hi, I have one more question before I start Tabata, when is the best time to do it, morning, evening...?
