I understand that it makes me retain water, but so what? I am not trying to be a body builder. I also know that it raises blood pressure but if I monitor that and keep it under control, is there any other downside to salt?
Thanks
Why is salt bad?

No, it's not necessary at all to reduce your salt unless your intake is very high. If your family has a history of high blood pressure of course you should use caution. If you aren't bothered by water retention there isn't much to worry about. You may want to get an idea of what your daily sodium intake looks like compared to the recommended daily allowance to make sure your intake isn't excessive, but otherwise don't worry.
I eat a fair amount of salt/sodium. blood pressure is low, too low actually. Most of the time I don't care about water retention. Before a photoshoot I'll drink extra water and take a water pill to reduce water retention but that's it.
