you eat more than you burn...youll gain weight...
you eat less than you burn...youll lose weight....but it might be muscle and not fat...if your not giving your body what it wants...its not going to keep around excess muscle that it can't support...1 pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day resting...
you want to eat just enough to support your calorie burning...then youll gain more muscle..improve your metabolism and eventually youll have to increase your calorie intake again or you'll plateau...feed the machine =)

Thank you guys very much for your input. I workout in the mornings so I'm going to try to eat a fuller breakfast. I'm sure things will level out in the long run. I think I need to stick to the Canada Food Guide (and yes you're right I'm not consuming enough calories). I'm looking around for a good routine; main concern is to not leave anything out so as to cause future complications or disproportions.
Cheers,
Mike

It's a guide we have here to let people know what they should be eating. You can check it out by clicking on that link.

Didn't have time to read all that site, but I'd agree, and their snack choices are a bit inadequate.
Not least for the fact most of the Snacks have almost no Protein, espeically things like Nuts and seeds, unless you eat Cashews which have Carbs, you get loads of good quality Fat but no Carbs, and little Protein.
If you're bodybuilding, things like Nuts and Fruit on their own as snacks, will only help you bulk down, or get stunted bulking.
I would avoid that guide, as it's too hit and miss. I saw things I could and couldn't agree with. but for those who are less understanding of such matters, anything on a site like that could look great, and some of the choices / advice falls a little short in places.

Real quick
Just real quick. No guys don't have to have ANY body fat to sustain life. But after 3% your body starts eating off muscle. But with the right diets guys can sustain no body fat. I would not recommend it for longs periods of time though.
Girls on the other hand start to lose things like their period below 11% and even lower can be dangerous.
Just one more Plus of having a X and a Y chromosome!
I wish you the best of luck i your fitness journey!

Okay this forum is about the guy who wants to lose BF% and gain muscle not about claiming zero percent body fat.. Alright Mike, the HIIT is the best solution. I hope that was a typo about only eating 1000 calories because you need a hell of a lot more than that. Try the HIIT for a while, then once you get the hang out it, do it when your body is in caloric deficit. The absolute most effective time for burning fat. This is when you first wake up in the morning and you body is on a fast (breakfast actually means "break the fast). But we want to do 10-25 minutes first thing in the morning walk a minute, sprint all out for a minute and repeat.. Super challenging but the results will come. The calorie counting isn't something that I endorse at all. It is accurate that you will need to eat roughly 2500 calories at your height and weight to reach your goals. Try focusing more on eating clean and frequently (every 2-3.5 hours). Substitute oats for bread, cut out the sugar, eat as much meat, fish, and eggs as you can. Don't forget vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. Taste isn't the greatest but if you want results choose these more often than other snacks. Get on the high intensity interval training and eat more, more frequently, but keep it clean and you'll be set. Good luck! Let me know how you fair.
you say to eat before bed when you don;t need any calories but then say don;t eat when you do???You absolutely MUST eat after 8pm, unless you are going to bed at 8:15pm! When you go to sleep you are fasting, your body is clearly not consuming any calories.. If you increase this fasting time by not eating before you go to bed you are only going to store body fat because your body thinks it is starving. Some people lose huge weight because they stop eating after 8 pm, but lets not forget that they were eating garbage after 8 pm. Don't go out and order an XXL pizza before bed but having a meal consisting of veggies and protein will only help you reach your fitness goals, not hinder them.
fasting cardio = devil

I know that you are quite educated in this field as well. This comment is not directed towards the debate on eating before you go to sleep. If he is trying to not gain any extra weight, doing hiit for 10-25 minutes immediately upon waking up will definitely help him do that. The reason simply is if he drinks say a protein shake and has a banana before training, he will burn sugar from the food, not the fat he is trying to get rid of. Breakfast is absolutely crucial, but that doesn't mean cardio before he has breakfast is the devil. It may be for what you are doing, and it isn't what I am doing for current lifting stage but doing it at a caloric deficit for what he is trying to accomplish can be very effective.
