Just thought id start another discussion and see what kinda opinions are out there.

Please note that i have said 'fat' and not 'overweight' as there is a difference.

personal opinion is that i am more likely to take advice from someone who has a good physique themselves as it makes me feel they know what they are talking about.

Can you be fit and fat? Well to a degree I think you can but eventually it will deter ones fitness.


Saying that it is everyones choice to eat what they want. So being fat doesnt mean they do not know their stuff.

yeah i'd definately take advice from a fat person. unless it was about how to lose weight -- then i'd be a little skeptical.
i usually take advice from anyone though and i've learned that it's not a very good idea

well its a bit like taking advice on what shampoo to use.... from a bald bloke! :D seriously though im a beleiver in practice what you preach. so id tend not to take advice on fitness from a fatty!

Call me shallow but I personally want someone with good physique to help me lose weight.

Not saying someone that’s big is not healthy or doesn’t know their stuff. I mean, they probably can lift hecka weights but just have a big beer . However, with someone who has a good and healthy physique would be a motivation for me to work hard to be like that. :)

Dont you think though that people often know what to do, they just dont have the will power, desire etc?

I know how I could be 110lbs but id never have the desire to do it. Or be restrained enough for that matter. Just a thought.

fat personal trainers is ridicoulous and god there are a lot out there...it doesn't make sense...they obvuously have no idea how to put themsleves into their clients shoes and have no personel experience with any form of exercise other then crunches leg poress and chest press machines

Never have...never will and gym is filled with them, with the exception of 1 pilates instructor.

if he squat 700 then he can be fat as hell no prob.

he'd have to be a powerlifter not a personal trainer to be fat and that strong.

besides, how many trainers do you know can squat that much? except maybe poliquin, thibaudeau and cosgrove. and even thib was a powerlifter once.

cosgrove can't, he's weak as baby right now (coming off a second bout of cancer), i doubt any of them could anyway really

just because you're strong doesn't mean anything...there's plenty stronger then me on here but they're asking me for advice

he went to remission i think for a while then it came back but he's back on the mend again, that might have been a yr ago now when the 2nd bout finished up

I would to some extent agree with the practice what you preach comment, but not completely.

I mean what if someone has a Wheat allergy, should they never come on here, and advise people to include Whole-grain in their diet? Or what if you're Lactose intolerant, never tell people to eat Yoghurts, or low Fat Cheese?

Heck I advise people to eat some stuff I don't, but usually I won't eat those things for reasons like smell or taste, or in some cases principles, but I'd still expect, if I think someone might benefit from considering low Mercury content Fish, as a possible diet inclusion, they would, not respond with, "you don't eat Fish, so don't say I possibly should fella. Damn hypocrti", or something like that.

I admit though, people who are overweight, shouldn't potentially work in gyms at all as trainers, unless they have an LBM, BMI within a set range, as it's a bad advertisement for the Gym. Not being fattists, but how many overweight people would trust advice from people who look a bit like them?

In regards to diet though, well I don't think Gym instructors should be admonished, if they are in some cases people giving diet advice, (some probably aren't expected to), and then caught eating a lunch of White Bread Sandwiches with full Fat Mayo on for example, and not a Chicken and Broccoli Lunch instead, as we don't want to be too harsh, because Gym instructors and PT's are humans too, not massive rolemodels who represent everyones hopes and dreams, like sportspeople and actors are :wink:
