protein shake with carbs?

Post by RK19 »

im going to buy next batch of protein powder and im wondering if its better to get one with carbs? bossman- i know you said its better to get one with decent carbs in it, but would i have the same effect if i ate carbs along with post workout shake, rather than have it pre-built in the shake? anyone recommend any good ones?

You could try a customised mix of Myprotein,co,uk.

Alternatively you just need something with Concentrate, and a source like Palatinose, Glucomannan, Maltodextrin, Waxy Maize Starch etc etc.

You'll find most have a higher ratio of Carbs to Protein, and also you'll find the doses are quite large. Some give you 50g Carbs and about 60-70% that amount in Protein.

If you don't need a massive amount of Protein, thne you could dose it yourself. I use one that says about 4 scoops, (100g), per shoot, but that would get used in around 2 weeks. I use roughly 10-12 tspns when I have a full dose, which gives me around 4-5 weeks out of a 3lb tub.

You can mix things in your shake, like Honey, Crushed Cashews, and be creative too, like a bit of Ginger, Nutmeg, Cinnamon etc etc.

If you want a seperate Carb source, than some Whole-grain Bread with or without Honey, small bowl of Cereal, Milk and / or Honey only as additional Simple Carb sources obviously. possibly a bit of Pasta as a different alternative.

im just curious as to why its better to have a higher carb-protein ratio for a post workout shake? i know carbs help protein get to the muscles faster, but i would have thought the protein would be priority?

It seems to be the way it is with companies that add the Carbs.

Probably because you need a solid Insulin response that lasts, to make the most of the Macro combination, and a lot of Protein would get wasted if you had something with say 50g Protein for example, and less Carbs, to keep calories in check.

Yes. Strange thing is, recently they started calling it Protein and Carbs in one, and now it's got 3g Creatine per serve.

Costs about 50p more oer 3lb tub, but I'm not particularly bothered about it, as I don't have Protein powder daily, but it did rub me up a bit the wrong way, that they chose to add some Creatine for no discernable reason, and by the sounds of things unless the MD of Nutrisport is on holiday, polite e-mail a few days ago, has either been ignored, or he's not gotten round to seeing it, but adding the Creatine to me seemed pointless, adds nothing in the way of product performance, and just increases the cost a little bit, but presumably it could be to sneak a little company profit in hard economic times.

I'll still use it, but I'm hoping as I know from his receptionist or PA I spoke to in person on the phone, I'm not the first to question the added Creatine content, so maybe he'll erconsider and get rid of it.

It's still a good product though in estimation.

so if i was to get one with carbs would i still need to eat sugary cereal after workouts or would there be enough in the shake? also is it wise for me to buy that shake if it now contains creatine? or would it be fine?

seen another one that looks appealing. its called "90+ protein"
(per serving)

protein=90g :shock:

carbs= 1.4g

of which is sugar=1.4g

fat=1.4g

of which saturates=1.4g

fibre=0.8g

sodium=0.05g

what do you guys think? im looking to bulk so this sounds good to me.

Cyclone is full of Creatine, which means you're limited about how you use it, unless you want to get too much Creatine per day.

I would still say get a Powder with Carbs, as it's not that expensive, as long as you're not dosing it massively. If you're using about 1/2 - 2/3 dose, you will make it last longer.

You could still add a few Crushed Oats, or some Honey in to increase Carbs.

I know the one, infact I used it years ago, but due to constraints, I dosed it very low, and got little results off it, but then diet, and other things were at that time, not as rock steady, because I took it in first 12-18 months of lifting, and didn't want to be spending too much.

Good for the price, but as it's a Nutrisport one, for the costs involved, I would say yes, and add your Carbs, or look for another one with Carbs in it.

There's a few companies in this country, including Nutrisport, Maximuscle, CNP, Title Boxing, Peakbody and possible others, so you should be able to find something suitable for a good price.
