Headaches While Lifting

Post by jms_0013 »

Hello everyone, well it started just a few days ago. Evertime I go into the weightroom after warming-up I usually do a set of pushups. Im fine until about 15, I get a horrible pain in the back of head/neck. It coninues for a while. After everytime I lift anything it alwais happens.
I've read up on some of these causes. It said things like dehidration, heat exhaustion, or I even could have strained or punched a nerve in neck. Has anyone experienced these? What did you do?

I had the same problem about 2 months ago, someone posted a similiar topic somewhere in these forums. I was doing bicep curls and went for a last rep where I used poor form and bent back and felt this rush of pain in head, and coudln't do any other bicep work including curls or chin-ups. I self diagnosed myself as having strained a nerve on the back of neck, as someone had told me the same thing happened to her at work.

I completely rested for 3 weeks doing nothing for 2 weeks and only pushups for the 3rd week. The problem hasn't reoccured and I didn't really lose any strength in that time, just lost 3 weeks of a chance to make gains. Oh well, at least the pain is completely gone.

Congratulation for thinking of your health by starting to workout. As you mentioned everything will be the cause of your pains. Start everything with light exercise, since our body need to introduced first to our new activities. Try low repetition first probably for a couple of days of training. By then gradually increase the resistance so that you body will be adjusted. I hope this will help.

P.S. Consulting your Doctor will also a good step.

make sure your breathing properly when doing any exercises. you may be unwittingly holding your breath and straining yourself too much.

Past couple of days ive had a major head pain when ive started liftin weights, it also happened yesterday when i was doin skip rope cardio,

Its like a thumping pain in the head that you cant ignore and jus work through. I think the cause of this for me may be the neck as well, neck is now sore and im usin a herbal heat wrap on it.

im sure ive had this before with liftin, i think its down to either poor form, or when u have the barbell across your shoulders to do squats etc. with heavy weight, maybe it rolled onto neck.

pain in the thats for sure...

yeah I might. It weird though, I only get when im doing pushups or chinups. When im doing pushups I never look down. I always look forward. It sometimes happens with other exercises but these are the worst.

There is quite a lot written on the subject and it is quite common among migraine sufferers.

Here is one article: http://www.relieve-migraine-headache.co ... dache.html

You can Google: "Exercise induced headaches" and you will find endless articles about this.

None seem to mention pinched nerves, however. There are some cautionary remarks that say to the effect that is it possible that this is an indication of something serious and if it gets really bad you should see a doctor to rule out any of the more serious possibilities.

I would add that there seems to be a very low incidence of exercise induced headaches being indicative of serious conditions, but read the articles and decide what you want to do.

your head should always be i a uetral position, not looking up or down but straight ahead from ther position yor spine is in

also make sure that your shoulders are down and back as it seems your upper traps are very dominant and lifting everything up when you do push ups and chin ups
