don't know what kind of program I need to be doing

Post by cherylhop27 »

I am interested in dropping some weight and toning up. I want to start lifting weight. I do have a gym membership but I am more interested in being able to weight lift at home with 5-10 pounds dumbbells.

I never know what to do. Can anyone give me some good advice on what types of exercises I should be doing and as a beginner to weight lifting how many minutes and how many days a week?

i would utilise the gym as the more wt you can lift the more efficicent and of a higher quality your workouts will be

maybe try this:

I've been using a program called Red Carpet Ready with success. There are some before and after pictures at http://www.fitnessalist.com. Basically it involves weight training, cardio, and eating right, but it's for beginners who want to get a toned look.

I'm sorry to say, and this sincerely isn't meant with disrespect, but it appears as if it involves a little smoke and mirrors to me.

A: some of the before and after photos, include no shot of the faces in the before pic, and some of the others involve after photos, where the subject is even further away from the camera than before.

With the exception of one person, who you can tell looks like the same person, it's difficult to put store in most of the photos, as being the same people. Not saying they're not, I just cannot be convinced on such evidence.

B: As for the rubber band used, most Gyms have them. Bit gimmicky labelling them secret weapons.

C: DVD's telling you you can lose 5lbs in 6 days, smack of bad news from the off. You might piossibly lose a lot of water, or do some whacko type thing, but enevitably, you'll almost certainly regain that weight probably, because if your body isn't automatically primed, or conditioned to maintain those end results as a natural every day thing, it won't.

D: Also saying it's the same stuff they give to people like Cindy Crawford, is sod all reason to use it.

The system from the webistes, appears to smack, of possible subversion, bent truth, spurious claims, etc etc.

I did google you, only to make sure you weren't hawking or selling a concept, as I've seen posts like that before from newcomers, and it usually reeks of spamming. I can tell you're not one of othse, and you seem from previous activities like a well educated, interesting person, who we would most welcome as a part of this site.

However I would venture to suggest, you might possibly have been taken in by a too good to be true, kind of system, that relies on name dropping, boasts of little initial substance, and subtle marketing ploys.

Especially the name dropping, that has and always will be an absolutely stinky way to sell anything. Yeah, maybe getting someone famous on TV to buig something up, might be okay, (still no reason to buy it), but saying hay Cindy Crawford uses this, or Tiger woods, Usain Bolt and half the Buffalo Bills, use xyz product just is cheesy marketing, because it doesn't mean the product will work or is right for you.

So again, apologies for sound a bit abrupt, it's no reflection on you, but that concept got radar going, and I believe with good reason.

If you wanted to remain here and provide us with any of your 10+ years of insights, I'd be happy to see that.

Hi! I do not have a gym anywhere near me, as I live in the sticks! Plus I have two little ones, so I train mostly at home and sometimes outside. I jsut wanted to say that for me, I had to start with 5lbs dumbells, warming up with 1lb (ball weights). What I did was research the strength training exercises for each muscle group and made myself a check list to do every three days. I'm now up to 8lbs dumbells and training every 48 hrs, which I am told is the max you can do.

If you're interested I can list personal ones, but Im sure you will find a lot of great lists for a strength training set of exercises in the forums!

I also bought a big ball to train with, I guess it's a pilates ball? Big, you can sit on it and bounce. Also came with a stretch band and the 1lb ball weights. It came with a DVD PTFit it's called with Rosalee Brown, she'll work you out!
