So, in summary running isn't bad for you generally, even if you are of the female persuasion? :) I'm thinking the incline on some of the programs I was using was too severe - and I did take the Fitness test which was only 5 minutes, but it was a killer, the incline went as high as 10. Hmmmm.......and I wonder what happened, duh! Clearly I need to adjust something.....and I have been listening to body which I think is essential if I don't want to do any serious damage.

I'm sure there's a lot of room for improvement in hip/ankle mobility - glutes are still ok  I'm working hard at getting core in shape....the front/side and back step overs, the Bosu Ball balancing, squats on BB......I haven't been posting everyday, but each day I do at least something to try to build core strength. At a minimum I hold shoulders back, hold abs tight (exhaling) and glutes engaged - generally watching posture...even as I sit on at this computer. In the next couple of months I will be studying most days...a good portion of those days with the N.A.S.M course. Once certified (if I pass!) I hope to at least have the knowledge to give more answers/suggestions than ask questions. but I'll always have a questioning mind...looking for more - for better to be the best, etc.

joints are 57 years old - and I still have an extra 10-20 pounds, so I'm sure the pounding on the treadmill isn't the greatest, the stress is definitely higher than it once was. But whole body should be in shock after years of neglect, now being challenged almost every day. It's hard to believe I once played baseball , coached a little league team for 4 years, played tennis - water skied , snow skied (expert slopes with these fragile joints)and was generally very actively engaged in sports. For that matter when I was a little girl I use to arm wrestle with the boys!! And won most of the time!! Ha!! I forgot about that!...you see, I grew up with 3 brothers....I didn't have much choice, I was always just one of the boys :)

Oh - I forgot! Since fish oil pills were huge and I had a hard time swallowing them, I now take a teaspoon of Norweigan Cod Liver Oil (liquid, yeah!)daily. It's a little pricey but I understand that it will also assist me with dry skin.

Have a great evening!

I personally dont have pain when I use the treadmill, but I find the elliptical machine serves as a great vessel to do the HIIT on & is no impact ? Anyway lu, best of luck on your choice of machines :)

ha! Me too, Lu. You and I sound alot alike! I grew up with 2 older brothers and was always determined to keep up with them, and do whatever they did. I, too, played baseball (even in the Women's city leagues up until a few years ago), & tennis, pretty much involved in competitive sports in some aspect all life. But I have never snow skied or coached a team - I bet you were a great coach! :D
I understand how it feels to get back into working out and making demands on your body that you haven't done in a while. body doth protest! But heart is still in it 110%! And you may feel more aches and pains now, that is only natural, but like you said, you are challenging your body everyday and doing more than most women in their 20's even attempt to do. Be proud girl! You are awesome!

Of course you will pass Lu, and you will be great! I have no doubt you will conquer anything you set your mind too. :D

Crazy busy yesterday and even more so today as family is coming over tonight. We'll have our traditional Pasta w/anchovies and walnuts (don't know how to spell the Italian name for it  ), then a Red Crab Sauce with Lobster tails for the second entree. Both are well loved by family and it's really a watered down version of the traditional Italian Christmas Eve. No fried fish for us! We will have a salad and pumpkin pie cake for dessert. We will inevitably eat quickly as 5 & 6 year old grandsons will be anxious to open their gifts from us!

Yesterday I went to the Physical Therapist who first put a heated pad on shoulder for 10 minutes, then manipulated shoulder/arm, pushing pulling etc. While she worked on I asked if she knew Eric Cressey (she did not) and we discussed rotator cuff strength, tissue quality, scapular stability etc. In her manipulations, tests I guess, she found external ROM which is normal at 90 degrees, mine was almost 120 - but internal ROM was 45-60 degrees...can't remember exactly, but that's where I have tightness. Aside from the exercises from last week, she had me do an external rotation with ceiling punches, bringing arm up as far and as close to ear as possible. 2 sets of 20 with a 5 lb DB...started with 2lb, then 3lb..but clearly I needed more weight. We also discussed posterior delts, or maybe more commonly known as the reverse flyes using 5 lb DB's. I should have performed them last week, but I forgot. She then had me get on the floor on knees, in a semi prone plank position, holding on to the middle of a board that was held by bands of tension, pulling side to side in long movements, then 30 secs of fast and smaller movements. Don't know what this thing was called?? I felt after talking with her that she understands what issues are and will pursue the appropriate care to resolve.

In the morning I did Cardio on the treadmill, steady at 3.5 mph, no incline. Today will do weights a mirror of last weight post.

Have a fabulous holiday!

that sounds delicious! What is a "traditional Italian Christmas Eve"?
I wish you a very Merry Christmas, Lu! It is great that your family is coming over to share the evening with you, it sounds like a very warm, wonderful, special, family time - :D Good stuff!!!

Good to read about your progress. GOOD LUCK with that yeah :).

I'm assuming a traditional Italian Christmas Eve, doesn't involve a bad italian sterotype, where you wear fake moustaches, say eyy, eyy, eyy and belissimo a lot and do that three finger and thumb kissing gesture, with your mouth

Ha, Ha!!! Very funny - but truly the traditional Christmas Eve includes all kinds of "fried" fish and fried vegetables - NOT something I include for obvious reasons :)
But I wasn't good - I ate too much and couldn't stay away from the Pumpkin Pie Cake - which was to die for!!! Like I've said before I was never a dessert person, but for some reason now it seems to be a problem for me...but only IF it is around  so, I know what I need to do

I did take a day or two off and frankly I can't remember one day from the next. BUT, Christmas Day evening we went to son Michael's house and played bowling on his new WII system. I couldn't move the next day!!!!!!!!! Hard to believe that a simulated game can affect your body the way it does! I was planning on working out yesterday but really couldn't do it - and body was in worse shape as the day went on. Then we had a crew over to watch the football game (The GIANTS sucked big time!!!) ate Chili, and snacks...I didn't do too bad. I did work out - weights, mostly upper to get new shoulder exercises in. I did 2 sets of 20 of most everything, side steps, front steps, back steps, shoulder presses (8 whole lbs!), lat pulldowns (70 lbs), posterior delts (5 lbs) - incline bench presses 8 lbs. Dead lifts 45 lbs. Bar only and sat ont he floor with arm ion the bench, raised DB (5 lbs) and an then a punch - 2 x 20 of those too. (Not in proper order)

Today I did the HIIT (3 interval) session, 5 minutes slow then 20 minutes at 3.7 mph. I chose this one as it only goes to incline 3 on the interval and I'm still taking it easy on knees/shins.

We're going out to dinner (our anniversary restaurant) New Years Eve for an early dinner and no party. What party poops huh? Our friends are going to Cancun this year and it just wasn't our answer. We wanted a destiantion event, but not there. So, quiet night for us.

See you tomorrow - deep tissue massage frome in the AM, then working out at 1 PM.

We'll all get through this time!

chicks have a wide q angle which is the distance from the widest point of the hips to the knees, think knock knees

when you run it makes this worse as there's now forces involved

watch chicks run, they're feet go outwards from behind and the knees cross each other, rubbing even, from the front

this is tight adductors and weak glutes

just because your glites can squeeze, it doesn't mean they do what they are meant to do, ecspecially if it's opposing muscles are so strong

internal rotators of the shoulder - pecs, front delts, lats, subscapularis

treatment - thoracic extensions over a foam roller, get massage and a tennis/golf ball into the subscap and roll which should hurt like hell, try a sleeper stretch but not to the point of pain but keeping scap locked (search youtube), lower trap activation with wall slides, band pullaparts and prone y raises, activate serratus with push up plus holds on a smith machine bar

it seems she's integrating before isolating which is ordinary...the fact she has you raising your arm over 90 degrees when you can't control the scapula below that is ridiculous to me, ecspecially with wt
