Calories and calorie burning
do you have to burn more calories then you eat?

I like to think of calories this way...
Imagine your bank account. Your current weight is the amount of money you have in the bank today. In order to reduce the money you have in the bank, you need to spend more than you earn. The opposite is also true. If you want to increase your money, then you must earn more than you spend.
The calories you eat each day is the money you earn. The calories you burn each day is the money you spend. So, to lose weight, you have to burn more calories than you eat - spend more than you earn.
The money you spend can also be separated into two types. You have bills that you have to pay to keep the lights on and the water running. Then you have money you spend on those other things such as going out, buying CDs, and the like.
In our calorie example, the bills are you basal metabolic rate. This is the number of calories that you burn with just your life functions - breathing, digesting, etc.
Then there are the fun things that you spend your money. This would represent you daily activities including exercise. This is also called your total daily energy expenditure.
So, in summary your bills (basal metabolic rate) plus your "walking around money" (daily eneregy expenditure) should be less than the amount of money you earn (calories you eat) in order to have your bank account (weight) shrink.
