What kinds of protein shakes are good for WOMEN?

Post by Lindsipettit »

I have been reading a lot about protein and how much i need. I read that you should have 1 gram for every pound.. I'm 170 so the only way i'm going to consume 170 grams of protein is through shakes. I read that a lot of them cause gas and bloating. That is something I would like to highly avoid. What suggestions does everyone have. I know i'm not getting enough through regular diet.

If you weigh 170 you could probably get by with 135-170 grams of protein. What does your current diet look like? Post an example if you'd like so we can see where changes can be made to increase that protein.

Actually Brnt some shakes can cause bloating. The culprits for some peoples bloating ,if it happens, include Casein and Maltodextrin.

This is normally what I eat.
8:00 am- Oatmeal, or multigrain cheerios w/ non fat milk, and coffee w/ nonfat milk or sugar free hazelnut creamer, and splenda.
11:00 am- Salad with chicken or turkey and lots of veggies, piece of cheese. Or a turkey sandwich on Wheat or wrap.
2:00-3:00 pm- a piece of fruit
6:30 pm Some sort of protein, broccoli, and brown rice.

I quit drinking diet soda. So I generally have plenty of water, tea, and one cup of coffee a day.
I suppose I should eat protein with every meal??

Yes you should definitely eat protein with EVERY meal. How about making some simple changes such as:

8 am: 1/2 cup oats or cheerios with nonfat milk and 3 scrambled eggs
11am: salad w/ chicken or turkey, veggies, and cheese
2pm: piece of fruit, 11 almonds, 3-4 oz chicken, fish, turkey, lean beef, or lean pork
6:30: protein, broccoli, brown rice
8:30-9:30: 1/2-1 cup greek yogurt or cottage cheese, 1 tbs natty nut butter

This meal plan would provide you with about 170 grams of protein. :)

Thanks for that. I will definitely try to incorporate these things into diet. I've always heard not to eat 2 hours before you go to bed. I go to bed at 10 so is it fine that I eat that late? What is natty nut butter? Also Greek yogurt has a lot of sugar in it. The one that I checked yesterday anyway. What brand do you normally get?

The "don't eat 2 hours before bed" thing is pure nonesense. I eat last meal right before bedtime and it has never affected me.

Natty nut butter.... Natural nut butter. I prefer almond and peanut butter.

Greek yogurt has some sugar in it but not as much as regular yogurt. I buy the plain low fat kind. Most brands have about 140 calories, 24 grams of protein, and 9 grams of sugar.

Okay, the Greek yogurt I checked out is from yoplait and is new. It only has 15 gr of protein and 17 grams of sugar! I'll look for something else. Thanks girl!

Yeah shop around a little and you should be able to find some with less sugar than that.

The main thing to remember is, protein shakes for Women aren't a specific thing. One or two people make these. One company I forget the name of, does one with some Pink on the label, then claims it has things in it like Folic Acid and Iron and Omega Fats, I think. Things like that and a few other supposed nutrients, that are more beneficial for women than say men.

This is probably a little bit of clever marketing coupled with hype and then supposedly some kind of gender specific formula, to make you think it's more ideal than anything else, with a nice extra 50-80%, tagged onto the price for your trouble, I shouldn't wonder.

Fact is, these things are probably more gimmicky than anything else. The benefits may be more than just mild, but the product caters for a market that in opinion doesn't exist. You don't need gender specific Protein powders, because any decent one will do. Unless for some reason females couldn't make enzymes that break down Maltodextrin, or Casein, or something like that, (which is not possible, by that I mean any enzyme deficiency potential, would be possible in men too), then creating specific powders is not worthwhile except for the companies.

You could just take a shake, with half a Multi-vit. Remembering of course to have a multi-vit you potentially tested first for lack of fillers and potential digestibility.

Thanks bossman! I'm sure you are right about gender specific formulas. I bought a soy protein shake because I read that soy was better for women. Once again i'm not sure if this is true or not but i'm trying it out. I do not want to pay an arm and a leg for protein shakes. I'm slowly but surely incorporating more protein into diet and the shake helps! Thanks for your input :)

Soy contains substances called Phyto-oestrogens. They mimic Oestrogen and bind to receptors, which can baulk the effects of excess Oestrogen, which includes Gynocomastia, Blood Clot elevation and Breast Cancer.

Phyto-oestrogens or Lignans as they can be known, can be found in other things, like Flaxseed and Whole-grains too as examples.

Soy protein powders aren't necessarily better in terms of digestibility or anything like that, as that would depend on if it's Isolate or Concentrate for example, but for females, the Phyto-oestrogenic properties might be of protective medicinal benefit.
