pushup problem

Post by meaok77 »

I in no way can do a full push-up, so I do the "girly" push-up on knees. But I've been noticed the first time doing a push-up, even when I do the "girly" push-ups, wrists hurt like h-e double hockey sticks! I asked boyfriend to watch to make sure hands were under shoulders and that I was doing it properly. He said I was (except that I was arching back a little). He thought the fact I was arching back could be putting too much pressure on wrists, and made sure when I did push-ups that back was flat, but I told him it still hurt wrists and asked him if it should. He said I should only be feeling it in the shoulder region, not wrists, but that he also doesn't do a lot of push-ups. I don't feel it in shoulder region, at least not WHILE I'm doing the push-ups...I definitely feel sore the next day in triceps, shoulders etc. The feeling I'm having is sharp pains on the top of wrists when I go in the down position. He had me try push-ups on his "iron-gym" (anyone who doesn't know what that is...I'll post a pic), and it still bothered wrists.

I've tried the wall push-up, and that does alleviate the pain in the wrists, but that method just doesn't work for me. I like to push myself (not so much that I pull a muscle) and doing wall push-ups don't seem to fulfill "want" to push myself. Is there another exercise I could do that will give me the same results push-ups would give me?

I have 1Ib, 3Ib free weights, and a medium tension band.

A proper push-up will put your body weight on your arms and wrists. If you are new and not conditioned, your wrists will hurt. I would suggest that you take some time to build a little more arm and shoulder strength with your set of free weights before moving on to do proper push-ups. Once you feel no pain with the girl's push up, move on to the proper push-up. By all means push yourself, but do not rush. Cheers

Thank you! I started thinking that last night that it was probably because I'm not strong enough yet. I will work on arm and shoulder strength more before attempting to do another push-up. :D

The wall pushup may not be enough in your opinion for your chest, which is what a push up works, tricep are synergists ( assisting muscles )The wall push upsl enable some build up of wrist muscle, there are direct wrist muscle exercises such as wrist curls, wrist extensions, use google, good luck :) Push ups are very rewarding, though as alternatives you can do chest press, DB flys etc.If it helps any, mine hurt also when I started doing them & probably did for a month.

I "personally" have no issues with knuckles or wrists doing it fookun way. had issues doing it other FOOKUN way.
the push-up grip handles as seen on tv will have you not bending your wrists, but no ungawdly strain on your poor knuckles
one mans perspective.............

I only meant that from a anatomically correct standpoint of doing a push up, knuckles would not be textbook advised alternative, no offense meant.

Thanks for the replies.

I actually did try the knuckle idea and it hurt far worst than the wrist problems I'm having. I think I'm going to go with Bonnie and williamteo's suggestions and build up the muscles first so I can do a proper pushup. I used to be able to do them in HS because we had to do them during practice, but that was 15 years ago. I do a lot of chest press and DB Flys' (they're favorite exercise) and I'm slowly building up reps. and the number I do in each rep. bf came home last night and when I told him what williamteo suggested he showed me how to do the wrist curl exercise. bf also pointed out that the reason I wasn't finding the wall pushup effective was because I didn't have legs far enough back, so once he showed me that...I started feeling a difference in shoulders and back (wow, never knew I was doing that wrong!).

Its easy in the beginning to get things wrong, don't worry about it, its terrific you have the resource of your bf to help you out :) When in doubt google, watch a few video's & see which technique comes up most frequently. If you do wrist curls, don't forget to balance it out with wrist extensions.
