I have been given a HIIT routine on the treadmill which is 40 secs on (at 11mph) and 20 secs off for 10 mins.
I haven't tried it yet but mate said, you do realize the 20 seconds off is to jump off the treadmill onto the side and jump back on again instead of decreasing the speed to slow walk or switching it on and off again. Is this right? How is that possible if going all out for the 40 seconds?

Re: HIIT on the tradmill
I did first HIIT earlier, and I started slow to practice the jumping off and I was ok, it was easier than I thought.
I managed to do the speed at 10mph, after 30 secs on and 30 secs off for 10 mins it was a killer when finished but really good.

Re: HIIT on the tradmill
Not to say getting the full effects of HIIT on a treadmill is impossible, but it's not the most friendly machine to do it on. Your suggested routine might break your ankle if you jump right on between sets. If you're determined to use a machine try an elliptical or bike. You're less likely to incur a nasty injury.

Yeah thats what i used to think, it is dangerous.I start machine up & use this technique to get on, not so hard to do.Treadmill is the hardest HIIT workout possible.I also use the elliptical, no comparison.
