I'm brand new to this site and its first forum so forgive me if this isn't your typical forum format!
After looking up tons of sites online about jumping rope, I realized that maybe this could lead to the weight loss and toning that I'm aiming for! Boxers use it for coordination, agility, quickness, footwork and endurance. I hear it burns over 1000 calories per short session!
I've used the jump rope about three times a week for the past two weeks (only from 15-30 minutes at a time) but I've already noticed that stamina has changed big time!! I want to increase to 5 days a week but I got so sore these past two weeks. So three questions for you all:
(1) Some websites also insist that jumping rope for 15 minutes is equal to 30 minutes of jogging. Do you think that is legit?
(2) Other sources say that jumping rope leads to long, toned muscles just about everywhere in the body. What do you think about that?
(3) If I replace other cardio exercise with jumping rope 5-6 days a week for 30 minutes, would I see weight loss and/or toning results?
Can't wait to read some feedback!

Re: Jump Rope Program
I think jump rope is a great idea, I havent really done it much myself and just checked and the dog chewed mine, so I should get a new one.
Im not sure about those stats, but I think jump rope is very good for you and will definately lead to weight loss and toning. Here in Australia they annually have Jump Rope For Heart to reaise awareness about healthy lifestyles and heart health.
I would say you arms legs and mid section will definately benefit plus your overall stamina.
I am mean so im going to say- make sure you mix it up! Surprise your muscles to work them harder and to skyrocket your metabolism.
Alternate between jumping on the spot, running and skipping, jumping down into a squat to touch the floor and back up again =P Will be so hard but you will feel so good later.
I really want to do this now too!!
good on you for sticking to it this long already! Do you feel heaps good afterwards?

Re: Jump Rope Program
Haha silly puppy! That's what's so great about jump ropes - they're cheap & easy to replace!
Wow - I wonder if here in the states they have a Jump Rope charity program....or more specifically, Orlando, Florida. I might be an amateur but it'd be great motivation!
It's always encouraging to me to hear that jump rope will help out arms - that's one area that I'm desperate to improve on for this summer. I see tricep curls & whatnot but I can never stick to those programs because....I'm too lazy to remember the steps?
Thanks so much for your advice! This week I'm getting back on track with working out so I'm DEFINITELY incorporating your recommendations! I'm still working on tricks to incorporate into the jumping...takes a ton of coordination work to not fall on face haha.
I DO feel amazing after ANY workout, especially jump rope. It's fun for me because its not something that many people do nor want to do but I find it so much more exciting than treadmill.
If you do start jumping, want to cheer each other on? I can use all the motivation I can get - it's more encouraging to know someone else is doing the same activity as me!

Re: Jump Rope Program
First post!
Jumping rope has been a great way to shake up exercise routine. Plus, it really does help tone your arms, especially if you get the kind that has weights in the handles. Even the 3 or 5 lb weights will add a cool extra dimension.
When I run, I like to throw in a 100m sprint every mile or two. To shake this up a bit (when running on a track or some kind of circular location) I'll sometimes bring jumprope and instead of a sprint, I'll grab rope after each lap and do 100 skips.
Another fun thing to do is assign penalties when you miss a skip. I usually insist on dropping down to the nearest 25x factor (25, 50, 75, 100, etc.) if I foul up. Not only does it add some extra skips, it really does motivate you to concentrate on getting it right the first time.

Re: Jump Rope Program
I have a 15 minute jump rope workout on blog at http://www.kihonwasa.com/2011/03/wednes ... -jump.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I love jump rope. skipping for a a couple minutes is a great way to warm up for weight training. Intervals are great for the heart and doing different patterns of jumping helps you become more coordinated.
