I would suggest trying some kind of martial art that involves punching. Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kung-Fu, kick-boxing, boxing, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, Hapkido, Silat, Qi-gong... The many different styles and focuses of each different martial art are myriad.
I suggest that you find a gym where you like the people there. People you can have a laugh with and train seriously. Hopefully, you'll find an older instructor who can seriously train you so that you're conditioned properly.
Good luck.
I would also suggest particular research into Qi-gong's "Iron Fist" technique and Bruce Lee's Tao of Jeet Kune Do (a book).
Absorb what is useful, discard what is not.

its good that ur trying to hone ur punching skills, i'll let u in with some tips that i used to improve mine..
first of all, a punch's strength depends on how much power ur core generates.. so to generate maximum power, u need maximum muscle .. basically, make sure u do those leg lifts n oblique crunches.. u need to have strength in ur shoulders also, cuz they throw the punch, so build up strength there too. strong biceps throw the punch faster, and the faster the punch hits = the slower he'll recover after u give him the KO.
hope that helps, and pushups on fist sounds like a good idea, try punching walls (light enough not to damage ur hand bones) and over time it'll get nice and hard.
