Well it might help but ideally a good diet and weights would do more for that than swimming. It's just a type of resistance training, but if the diet isn't right you might end up burning some muscle.
Plus depending on how you do it, you'll potentially adapt meaning it won't work as well after a while.

hi friend swmming is a best exercise for lossing weight . it can make ur body fit but it shouldn't be helpfull for making abs . so all u have to need . u will have to do to some more exercises for Giving good shap to ur abs . so keep swimming too . best of luck .

Swimming is great for losing weight, toning muscle and getting fit. However, there is a limit to how lean it will make you. Because swimming is done in a liquid environment your body will keep a layer of fat on you as additional insulation. If you add other resistance and core work you should see the results you seek provided you follow the proper diet.

I have a problem with this, can you elaborate more what you mean, please? That statement alone could potentially scare off many overweight people who are thinking about trying a swim program to start their weight loss journey. Is this only if you are swimming in a cold water environment? Swimming is both resistance training and cardio, but like all exercise, you will only get out of it what you put into it, so a good solid swimming workout that challenges a person, and increases in time and/or difficulty can have great results in getting a fat reduced, lean body. I agree, that is should not be the only form of exercise and that is should be combined with a good weight training and diet regimen - but I just don't quite agree with the "layer of fat for insulation" thing.
