does fiber cause you to bloat and retain water?
Just wondering if it did. goal is to eat 25 grams of fiber a day and i heard that it does.

Too much can cause sloppy stools.
Water retention might possibly happen, if you increased water intake too much, but Fibre can actually reduce water stores, hence the need to consume more water if you have more.

I think it could be a problem if you ate mostly vegetables. And, if you mostly ate them raw. Vegetables are low in calories, so a lot of people go overboard on something that makes you feel full, provides vitamins, and is very low calorie. The fiber is supposed to help you lose weight because it carries the fat out of the body.
Apparently, the types of fiber you eat can cause a problem if you are not used to it, so it's recommended that you ease into it and start with smaller amounts while you get used to it. Also, drinking water along with the fiber will help with your digestion. Here is a link for that information http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/ ... ekey=16336" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I, personally, eat a high-fiber diet, because it actually helps me to have better digestion. And, I don't have a problem with bloating. I eat a wide variety of high-fiber foods from grains, beans, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. I've had a few rare incidents of bloating, but I lay on stomach and it is relieved that way. I don't have a problem with retaining water. I drink water everyday between meals.
With weight lifting, sometimes people have to take fiber along with their diet to keep their digestive system going. There is a chance that you can retain water in your abdomen as explained in greater detail on this link http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/water.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
The problem with fiber could be from the fiber supplements. Just drink enough water with your supplements to prevent a possible bloating or water retention problem. Eat a variety of types of fiber in your diet for balance. There are different types of fiber with different functions; soluble for the cleansing of the arteries and body as in beans and apples, and insoluble for better digestion as in psyllium hulls and grain fiber. And, water is helpful with the digestion.

Re: does fiber cause you to bloat and retain water?
Yes, insoluable softens up the stools as well, maiking it easier to defocate frequently, but too much can have a diarrhitic effect.
I think it also has an effect on the Smooth Muscle in the abdominal region, helping it to contract.
Something else that does that is an Omega 6 called Arachidonic Acid, derived from Linoleic Acid in vivo.
It helps with things like Prostaglandin formation, which in turn helps with things like clotting responses, inflammatory responses and smooth muscle contraction, so I believe, so Omega 6 intake is beneficial also, for potentially allowing better colorectal frequency.

It can if you are not drinking enough water to flush it out! Eating fiber is really good for you, so continue on your 25 grams a day, just make sure you are drinking plenty of water as well!!
Re: does fiber cause you to bloat and retain water?
Yes as some fibre can have a mild dehydrating effect.
