Nocarb diet: What's your take on this?

Post by jared767 »

I know someone who practically reduced carbs from his diet. He actually lost a lot of weight in a span of 12 months. But lately, he has been experiencing mood swings. He mentioned that after consultation, the culprit was due to lack of carbs on his diet. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? Or any idea about this?

When you say Carbs, do you mean Carbs carbs or just high GI Carbs?

It really niggles me when people spurting diet advice, (not you obviously), say cut down on Carbs and eat more fruit, veggies and grains and try to refer to things like Bread, Rice, Potatos and Pasta as Carbs.

Carbs are Carbs, there's simple and complex, not simple, complex, Bread, Pasta, Rice and Potato :P .

I believe he was talking about simple carbs, as those are the foods that are fattening, if I'm not mistaken.

When I was trying to do no carbs diet I was dying… lacking energy, snappy, moody, grumpy, brain not functioning… all the good stuff!! LOL

However, I added back complex carbs like brown rice, wheat pasta, sweet potatoes, oatmeal and things got better. I try to avoid food with high sugar intake like melons and have things like cucumbers or strawberries. Those sugars are still carbs but it’s very low in GI Carbs.

Things like Melon and Watermelon are not that bad in fairness. Yes Watermelon ranks around 73-75 on a GI scale and has around 1,300 calories per Watermelon, but when you think about how many calories and Carbs you'd get, from 2-3 scoops with a melon baller, it's not actually that bad, if you're consuming around 1/8-1/10 of the calories, which is between 130 and 162.5 calories respectively, which 2-3 melon baller type scoops may be.
