What would burn more calories? Running in general for an hour or this elliptical machine?

calories.

Well why the need to burn 700 at once. Seems a bit extreme to me, unless you're training for something like a Marathon, Tri-athlon etc etc.
You can increase running calorie burn anyway, by finding steeper terrain, increasign your pace, running with a weighted back-pack on etc etc.
P.S. depending on when people come on here, and who it is, sometimes queires get left unanswered for longer than 3 hours, sometimes less, so don't worry too much if that happens, it's not people not caring, it's just the way most messageboards work.

i would say running as your moving your own bodyweight where on the elliptical you don't...also if looking for calorie use per mode of exercise you should really look at TOTAL calories burnt not just what's burnt when actually doing it...cardio like that will burn more caloreis per hour but a solid wts session will burn more overall from raised metabolism as well as sprints and interval work
Any activity that causes a calorie deficit will promote fat loss, no matter the machine. The calories burned depends on the intensity and duration of the activity. Elliptical work can be very challenging if you set the resistance high enough. I suggest not focusing on the machine itself, but the quality of your workout.
