Since I have had issues with cystitis since I was a teenager (even had minor surgery for it), I was a little concerned that trying grapefruit might irritate bladder. Eating oranges and other citrus fruits, as well as anything carbonated has always made it worse. If you don't know, cystitis is a reoccuring condition where the urinary tract gets irritated to the point that it feels like a kidney infection or uti. Eating clean generally helps the problem.
Anyway, I decided to try grapefruit juice, as juices and sauces have never seemed to aggravate me. Let me tell you, grapefruit juice has made a difference in weight loss efforts! I only drink 8 ounces at a time, no more than 3 times a day, but it somehow seems to be keeping me from absorbing excess bad stuff when I don't eat so great. I feel like I've been on a and energy levels are better. I've also lost a bit of fat--and no achy bladder yay!

Carrot juice might be one to explore too.
The only thing to bear in mind with grapefruit, is it has some kind of compound(s) in it, that can interefere with certain types of medications.
One incidence a few years back iin America, resulted in a blood clot in a womans leg, that had to be treated using a plasmin enzyme, to dissolve the fibrin protein in the clot and then a shunt to drain excess fluid away.
The problem was a diet involving grapefruit consumption for the first 3 days, yes I know, sounds like one of those weird diets that make no sense, though the diet was never explained beyond that one point, but some sort of content in the grapefruit, interefered with her birth control sending her oestrogen through the wazoo and just in case you didn't know, elevated oestrogen can lead to breast cancer, gynocomastia and blood clots.
The driving / seating position in her car, was also counted as a contributary factor.
You may also benefit more from pink grapefuit juice versus normal. Pink grapefuit has from memory a little less vit C, but more vit A and calcium and has lycopene, which normal grapefruit does not.

Re: Grapefruit
I know all about that unfortunately:( cousin was on some kind of Hollywood grapefruit diet. It was all she was eating/drinking, but she also took antidepressants and a couple other medications. She died suddenly. They still aren't sure what killed her, but looks like the med/grapefruit combo may have had something to do with it.
Second, I tend to have too high estrogen levels anyway, or used to. Had to have surgery and be on hormone therapy and everything. I fortunately do not take any medications now other than aspirin/acetominophen now and again, plus a few vitamins.
Third, I didn't know carrot juice aided in weightoss. I will look into that as carrots, cantaloupe, and blueberries are all commonly listed as non-irritating to cystitis. Thanks.

Re: Grapefruit
I cannot confirm carrot juice aids weight loss, but it is known to be quite healthful.
As for excess oestrogen, you might like to consider soy and associated products, like tofu, tempeh, nattokinase, (fermented soy and added bifidus), edemame, miso, soy milk and soy protein powders as they contain phyto-estrogens that mimic oestrogen and bind to receptors, supposedly inhibiting the effects of excess oestrogen.
I think Genistein in soy, (called an Iso-flavone and of the flavanoid antioxident groups), is classed as a phyto-oestrogen, but recollection on that point is not golden.

What about cauliflower for lowering estrogen?
Re: Grapefruit
I'm not sure about that, but soy products contain phyto-eostrogens and in the case of genistein I think only soy products contain it.

I see, thank you.Boss Man wrote:I'm not sure about that, but soy products contain phyto-eostrogens and in the case of genistein I think only soy products contain it.
I think broccoli and cauliflower may mitigate some effects of some estrogens while the soy actually blocks the receptor sites.
