Two Questions for a Female
I am starting to go to the gym with friend and she's been asking me questions. I've been answering them all, but however one I wasn't sure of. The other I just thought of.
She has big calfs, she used to play soccer so I guess that's where they come from. I say they're fine, but she wants to get rid of them. I know it's hard to spot train (or rather spot 'diet') so I just told her to keep doing cardio, diet, and try and tone her calfs. Is there something I'm missing? Am I wrong?
Also, how long does it take for calf muscles to form? I have like.. no calfs so I've been trying to work them.
Also second question..
Do females benefit from doing chest exercises? Like butterflies and dumbell flies?
Thank you in advance. I appreciate it.

i'm no chick but...
calves are used all day so if they havfe grown big, they'll stay big unless she decides to not walk for a yr...
they are also highly genetic so if you don;t have decent one's naturally, the time and effort it takes to build them is noit reall worth it for the ave gym goer...i don;t do any calf work ever
push ups are better then flies, but what benefoits is she looking for? cleavage?

She wants to wear boots and she cannot get them over her calves, is bet.amatlack wrote:How about build up the thigh muscles to match?
What guy doesn't like muscular legs on his women?!
Six months in a wheel chair might work.
She might get some minor results by doing distance running.
Other than that, she should consider wearing high heels instead of boots.

#1 Genetics play a big role. I work calves but they'll never be as defined as I'd like them to be.Atticus wrote:I am starting to go to the gym with friend and she's been asking me questions. I've been answering them all, but however one I wasn't sure of. The other I just thought of.

#2 I do incorporate butterflies and dumbell flies as well as push-ups and chest press in weekly routines.

I, too, have fairly large calfs 1. because of genetics ( dad has big legs and so does mom) and 2. I did play soccer in junior high through college and run a butt load so distance running will not make them smaller. Just tell her to embrace them. Tons of ladies would rather have larger calves than chicken legs

Is your friend thin or on the heavier side? Simply losing weight might help if she is on the heavier side (although she will be losing weight all over, not just in her calves).
For the chest... as boopster said... definitely incorporate those chest exercises. For pushups try wide hands, narrow hands, inclined, declined, and flat. Flys, incline bench press, decline bench press, and regular bench press are also great too.... As a part of a balanced workout routine that is. They won't give you double d's but I believe they can help lift what you do have (to a point). :)

No she's not on the heavier side. Actually pretty thin. But she needs to work out to stay thin, or at least that's what some people tell her. She just told me she hates her calf muscles.cassiegose wrote:Is your friend thin or on the heavier side? I told her myself that I like them and I find them attractive. That most guys would, etc. etc. But she just won't listen to me.
I guess I'll just try and convince her that they're good and if you define and tone them.. everything will be fine.
question on the chest exercises was because we are trying to work out together. She's getting butt on the stairmaster and working on calfs, and I'm getting to do... pretty much everything else. Just wondering if chest exercises helped her because I'm really big on chest during routine.
But thank you all for posting. I do appreciate it and I know she will too.
And to answer amatlack's question... I think every guy should like a woman with muscular legs.

women should also remember that wearing anything with heels also works out the calf muscles constantly! If she has larger calves with the cut look to them they will not decrease in size at all. Just define more. If the cut is not there or is minimal than fat loss will eventually benifit her. As everyone has stated, muscular legs on women are sexy and calves are mainly genetic.
Cheers

Heels give a woman presence when she walks into a room. The right shoes will give a woman an assertive swagger that nothing else will match.swanso5 wrote:heels are the devil ladies...
I would not recommend high heels for all day, every day use, but when the occasion calls for it, heels make it work. (And they add some shape to the legs.)
I like a woman in heels and a classy dress (and jewelry). I'm an old fashioned guy.
