first protein powder purchase

Post by fitoverforty »

I bought some protein powder today. I have never bought any, so this is really a stab in the dark, but I found a small 7.5 oz. can of Soy Protein powder at Walmart for 4.97. It is called Spring Valley "Soy Protein Isolate Powder" Vanilla flavored. It has approximately 7 servings.
It says it has 20 grams of protein per 2 scoop serving, no sugar, no aspertame. Loaded with calcium and 20% of all the vitamins A,C,D,E.
Has anyone tried this particular kind? I am trying to add more protein to diet by adding protein powder to morning shake.
I know everyone has a favorite, or one that works best for them.
I want to do this right, and really begin to get the right ratio of carb/protein/fat.
I have heard from so many of you about healthy food and supplement choices, it has really been an eye opener to me, that I have to do more than just workout or run and watch what I eat. Diet and proper food portion, the balance of it all is crucial to weight loss success.
Boopster said it best in an earlier post and it has really stuck with me: She said:
"Abs begin in the kitchen so cleaning up your diet will help in that area."
I appreciate her honesty and hitting the nail on the head. It has motivated me to get very honest with food choices.
Any input on the protein powder choice is appreciated :)

It looks like you bought a decent one there, as it's an Isolate, with some Fat soluable Vitamins and Calcium. The only issue would be why it is such a small amount, as you're only getting enough as you say for 7 servings, (14 scoops).

Was it possible to buy larger sizes, as larger ones are always better value.

with first foray into a protein powder why would you want to buy a bulk container?
the way FOF bought a smaller quantity she will save some money if she dun like it and decides to throw it away. better than spending say 20.00 hating the taste and then being stuck eating crap you dislike or tossing 20.00 worth.

I say great choice of size as an experiment.

Good point Oscar. I just thought if she planned to make it a permanent thing, a bigger size might have sufficed more. Just curious as to whether the one she bought had larger sizes or not, as I'm not au fai with every different Brand name powder, because there's so many companies that sell them.

There may have been a larger one in that brand but I didn't see one, there were other choices in the larger containers. EAS was one I remember. It is a daunting task picking out a powder when there are so many different brands and kinds all promising to be the best!

I use Body Fortress, Vanilla Whey Protein purchased at Wal-Mart - just under $15 for 2 lbs. I started with GNC Soy Protein, and while both are good, Whey seemed to be the preferred option here for muscle repair / recovery so I switched. The Vanilla is tasty and real yummy especially combined with Vanilla Soy Milk (another protein source) - EAS seems to be well regarded and I might try that, but am happy with Body Fortress. Seems there are tons of brands out there and everyone has their own favorites. :)

Hmmm- I've never seen the almond milk - I'm always up for trying something new that would be better for me! I love the almond nut butter you recommended awhile back. I never use peanut butter anymore, but I do buy it for husband who is a peanut butter nut! But I now purchase all natural peanut butter for him. :)

I love the Vanilla Protein with fat free organic milk or even water. But it's yummy in cereal with Vanilla Soy milk. Breaks it up a bit too....

I use unsweetened almond milk for cereal… YUMMY! :D
But now I switch it with vanilla protein shake once in awhile… Costco... Those big bulk ones for under $30.

Well I tried the vanilla protein powder in morning fruit smoothie. REALLY liked it. It gave it a rich flavor. Next, I want to put a scoop in cereal using vanilla soy milk, see how that goes :)
It was funny, when I opened the can and smelled it, it reminded me of son's infant formula I used when he was a baby! good stuff :D

Yeah - glad you liked it! I figure a little sweetness in the form of Soy Milk can't hurt! It really takes the place of "sugar" for me - I know it may have some sugar in it, but it's much better for you than plain ol sugar! I actually look forward to cereal in the morning - yum, yum :)

I also use I use ON 100% whey. I know i am committed to working out and using it regularly. I buy the 10 pound bags why not i know i am going to use it. its best to mix with water for faster absorption i drank it with milk for a couple years it does taste better. but now i drink it right after the gym when am thirsty as hell mix it with water. still taste good when your real thirsty and use cold water for sure.
