Forget Diets! It's all about balance!

Post by tallgrrl8 »

I just wanted to mention that I see SOOOO many women go on diets. Whether it be Atkins, South Beach, Grapefruit diet, 1200 calorie diet, soup diet, shake diet etc etc.
I DO beleive that all of them work, but how do you stay on a DIET your whole life? So many people drive themselves nuts and because they are so focused on these diets, they literally become obsessed! I think that the obsession actually worsens your relationship with food! So, in the end, you end up having a BAD food and it's all over. Mentally, you've surrended, so you stop your diet.
I just wanted to say that I think if you really want to change your weight/size/body etc etc ...that you should look at it more as a lifestyle change.
Do you want to be healthy, feel great and live a longer better quality of life? Or, do you want to be constantly miserable, up and down on the scale and always depressed about your weight?

I hope I don't sound mean at all, it's just every person I talk to seems to want the fastest way possible to lose weight. They never ask me how to gain muscle - which actually BURNS fat and more calories at rest, or how to eat healthier - which will make you mentally and physically healthier!

Eat foods that have natural ingredients (things you actually know of), be active...if you don't like a routine, start biking, playing a sport you like, go for walks, play with your children, do yoga!
Try and start lifting those weights (trust me on this ---you will NOT bulk up if you're a woman) I've been lifting weights for years!
And dammit, eat that cake when you want!
Just be aware that you did have cake and you don't need to have it the next day as well!

If any of you out their want some advice, I'd be more than glad to give it!
And finally, just be happy!
The weight will come off, just don't obsess!

Personally I think some diets are crap, like the Maple Syrup diet, and some are better than others, but for me I think a good diet based on a few simple principles, backed up by a little willpower and some support from others, would still trump any kind of diet with a fancy name, even the good ones.

I totally get the ethos of your post though, and appreciate what you're saying.

Making a lifestyle change is hard when you don't see immediate results. I think the reason some people gravitate towards 'diets' when they want to lose weight is because the 'diet plans' tend to simplify things a great deal. There's little question about what to eat and when, when you're following a diet plan. I don't argue that it's better or that your advice is impossible- just that some people need a little more than that.

If it was so simple as just eatting better and moving, then no one would be overweight. Some people need a plan and have trouble coming up with their own, so 'diet plans' are effective in that they give people a headstart while they learn better habits.

Some people who promote cetain weightloss products are I suspect either.

A: In it for the money.

B: Being given massaged health / performance stats, so they won't get discouraged, from promoting possibly unhealthy or just plain useless products. After all nothing says "buy me" more, than a small amount of Heart attack victims

C: Actual people who used it, liked it and got so-called results.

If I was to break that down into some estimated percentages, I would probably say, A: 49%, B: 49%, C: 2%.

Plus potentially the biggest piece of visual marketing, for weight loss products / cleanse things, is when a well known athlete or actor / actress, says it's good.

Usually it's either their product, or there's a direct connection to it, using some companies product being an indirect one, or the person is getting so many $$$ or £££, they'll say any old crap off a piece of paper.

At least with a different product like a Protein powder, even if a Swedish Golfer says uses it, it's no reason to buy it, but at least the association to the product looks more honest, though I daresay even then, some products of type or marketed by people interested not in the benefits or in using it, but just in the pay cheque they'll get.

Great post,

I agree a lifestyle change is the only way to go and hope I am able to continue it as it has been 2 months for me and minus 18 LBS. I am one of those that in the past has been up and down like a yoyo and really don't want to go there again. I find in today's world it is so much easier than 10 years ago with all kinds of information and products available there really is no excuse
