HELP and advise Please!
Hi everyone,
I am writing here because I have reached a point where I need all the inputs I can get. I started weight training in March this year and have made considerable gains. Lost about 20 kilograms (98 Kgs- 78 Kgs), I have also lost inches on waist and other body parts and have gained considerable strength over all. Having said that I am stuck at one point where I am unable to get strength. I cant do Chin Ups! I can not do a proper rep of a chin up .. either I go half way up from the Bottom or mid way from top down. I have tried everything and trainer doesn't know how to help. It was due to this frustration that I have now started with Nitric oxide and Whey( first week also I am a vegan and ate only natural sources proteins to this point, With the start of Whey I feel less exhausted and sore and am able to lift more). Having said all that I am still unable to do chip ups, trainer is also frustrated and I feel very demotivated and let down with myself. I want to get fitter and stronger. I want to be able to do so much more. I don't drink, eat any junk food at all! I don`t eat refined carbohydrates, no sugar in diet, no white breads , I eat vegetables & Roti or better named Chapati ( unrefined single grain wheat bread). I eat a desert once a week with out any milk in it or dairy.
please advise, because I really don't know what else I need to do to get the goals I want. All you guys here have such great advise to give so I am trying luck.

Re: HELP and advise Please!
@ Lesplease, I know whey isn't vegan
, but in India its really tough to get vegan products i did ask for pure soy proteins/Rice proteins/ Seaweed proteins, but he didn't know and said that they weren't available. I went to two other shops and also got the same response. Vegan ism isn't really big here and hence the only non vegan thing I eat is whey.
@Swanson- I increased strength in various body parts. freeSqats I lift 100 kgs in final set. Chest I do about 30 kgs bench press , Biceps I do about 15 kgs in hammer curls and 40 pounds final set in precher curls . I can do about 45 push ups in one set now, I can jog 3 kilometers none stop.So body can do alot more than what i could when i started. He says try to lift your body, I do ... but arms start shivering and then I cant go any further, its really god damm frustrating, I have tried various variations of back exercises and other stuff, but alas no progress.
Nitric has helped me a bit by giving me power during sets(Today is Friday I started this Monday).
Any other advise.

no is a scam buddy sorry to say...
top 5 tips for chin ups:
1 - do them...if you can't do proper reps then do negative reps (jump to the top and lower yourself down from the very top position to the bottom as low as you can) x 5 reps 1/week incrfeasing the lowering time each week
2 - row, row, row...search as many row variations as you can do and train back 3/week...ecspecially upper back variations...pulldowns obviously
3 - deadlifts - just do them as heavy as you can...deadlift and chin up numbers have a direct correlation
4 - dare i say it, curls...heavy bb curls x 4 - 6 reps
5 - be patient yet consistent
30kg bb bench press? upper body strength is terrible if is

Re: HELP and advise Please!
@ Swanson- Thank you for the advise! Today is Saturday and Sunday is rest day so Monday i will try for sure. I am gonna talk to him about increasing back exercise variations. Its trouble spot. about NO- to be honest I have read a lot of posts here and blogs about NO and the reviews are mixed, here is view I can really feel a kick while I work out. Today I did arms (biceps and Triceps ) Usually I max out on the 40 pounds bar(I don t know what that is in Kgs) but today I started with 40 and was able to go all the way up to 60 which is great for me(preecher curls) hammer curls i did 25 pounds ,even other exercises I can feel I can lift better and still keep ROM(range of motion) correct. I guess for me seeing is believing. I do want ask you what happens when someone stop using it .. I read Lesplease views that you deflate(ha ha ha). more immediate concern is what impact will it have on performance in general. Will progress graph slide back? of will it remain there ?
@ lesplease- I know veganism is tough when people try to incorporate it into weight training.

training is about effort...put in the same effort and you'll get similar results

Yep I agree swanson I am trying, I wish I had asome pics of when fat to where I have gotten. next plan is to get lean and fit
Re: HELP and advise Please!
there is a machine out there for pull ups and dips that allows you to balance out your weight to be less so you can do the actual pull up. Unfortunately, I can't recall the name of it or which company made it (although I want to say stairmaster). I used it at the local YMCA when I got back in the game last year when I used a trainer to help me smooth way back in. 4 weeks of use (as well as other excercises) got me back doing chin ups and pull ups.
I realize you probably don't have this machine at your gym but just thought I'd let you know it was out there. I you are up to 3 km runs I would change it up and start some interval training and put a larger focus on strength training as swanso has stated above. remember it takes time and patience to build strength and muscle size.
Cheers

Re: HELP and advise Please!
Negatives are probably your best bet.swanso5 wrote:

The military acadamy (USA) invented negatives just for the purpose of getting recruits to be able to do pull ups.
In place of jumping up, put a stool a foot or so behind the bar and step off into the top position. Lower yourself as slowly as you are able. Repeat this for 10 reps.
After a few weeks you should be able to do one or two real pull ups. Do those and then finish off the 10 reps with negatives. Continue to replace negatives with regular pull ups as you are able. This will take time, but it will invariably work.
Eventually you will be able to do 10 pull ups. Three sets of 10 reps is a good workout.
Re: HELP and advise Please!
I know your problem. your a vegan how are you supose to get strong without eating real food. I dont understand people like you. Put your purse down and eat a chicken!
Re: HELP and advise Please!
lens_d, although I am a meat lover as oviously you are, vegans have various reasons for being vegans. Some hate the taste of eating flesh as you hate the taste of some vegies (I bet there's at least one you don't eat!). Some don't like the way feed animals are treated and don't like the thought of eating something they believe have a conscious and others who may believe in multiple lives, don't want to eat a friend. Whatever the reason the attitude and name calling is not helpful or required in or on this site. Please refrain from it.
The way to have bettered your suggestion would be to advise a higher protein intake. Any vitamin or mineral in meat can be found in vegie, if at differing levels, the exception is the unsaturated fat that is so abundant in animal-which we don't need anyway
.
thank-you and cheers

I like chicken; vegans don't.lens_d wrote:I know your problem. your a vegan how are you supose to get strong without eating real food. I dont understand people like you. Put your purse down and eat a chicken!

Re: HELP and advise Please!
problem with vegans is this: I took one out to dinner once and she ate veggies and I ate meat. So mouth was "soiled" and she wouldn't kiss me. It takes (apparently) over night for the mouth to become "un-soiled". Very disappointing.Lesplease wrote:I was a vegetarian for over 10 years, 2 of which i was vegan. I hated myself the entire time. I hate animals. I think people should eat them. They are delicious. I don't really like the way some of the meat animals are treated, but I'm not the kind of person to protest things. I just did it. I can explain how it started but it's pretty stupid. I just started eating meat back in April. I hate bacon and I refuse to eat pork because I think it is gross. I will eat turkey, chicken, beef and fish.
I just, personally, didn't do it. I still have problems eating meat (tummyaches!) though I am getting back to it. It is a very personal decision and the only vegetarians I don't like are ones who are irrational or condradictory. (I don't eat meat because it is morally wrong. But I love fish.) I also apply this logic to people with political opinions. If you want to believe in something, fine, just make damn sure you know what the hell you are talking about.
In conclusion, you can lift, build and be perfectly healthy. For me, it was easy (the school I went to was 75% vegetarian/vegan and the cafeteria only had meat 2 days a week). For many people it is not. But if it is something you believe in, it can definitely be done.
Okay, that's that (:

Lesplease wrote:Ahaha. Yeah I did that at the height of mine too. Eventually, I dated this one guy and I'd take him out for burgers just so we could m/o after and I could taste it too.
That actually sounds fairly sensible

Also note all the things that are really (really, really) bad for you are all veggies:
Heroine
Cocaine
Tobacco
Mushrooms (certain varieties)
Sugar
I mean, did you ever hear of anyone O.D.'ing on a hotdog? A salami sandwich?
I think I will stick with being a omnivore (for the time being).
