Should I use suppliments?

Post by laurenwilcox »

I'm only 14 and I've heard alot about creatine and protine shakes.
I'm wondering if it is a good idea to start on supliments.... I work out every day after school and I'm looking to bulk up bit and to gain stregth.
Any advice?
Thanks :D

well creatine and protein shakes are not really supplements. but i think you're too young to use creatine? idk. but protein shakes are fine as a post-workout drink and would help you out alot in terms of gains.

If you live in the US or Canada I wouldn't worry if you go in a GNC or Popeye's etc. Take the cheapest and you're on the road.

For creatine, you can try it but from what I see in your avatar the effect will be mostly placebo :)

I have really gotten off the creatine band wagon. While yes, I did see results while training on it I don't know what it has done to body and there hasn't been studies yet to show what has happened to people who used creatine then got old. It's already being produced within your body so when you put in a huge load of it in there, it could stop the body's natural production of creatine if it works anything like testosterone over time.

Plus, if you eat red meats creatine is already in those so if you want to get big and strong take creatine, if you're looking out for your health, don't is what I'm trying to say.

But I could be wrong, but no one could prove me wrong that it doesn't have long term adverse effects because it hasn't been on the market that long.

Also, for anyone trying to use supplements keep in mind that they don't have to be approved by the FDA to be put on the shelves.

Creatine and Protein Powder are supplements yes, but for females I really don't advise it really, unless you're a 170lb+ Powerlifting adult woman, or a female of that age and strength, as it will do very very little.

If you want a Protein supplement, get a Concentrate, with some Carbs in it, and have about 1/2 the reccomended dose with water.

Working out every day is not okay though, you shouldn't really go beyond 5 days with weights, and if you are doing 5 days, you can do a split, where you work a bodypart a day, but you've got to do it right and not lift too heavy.

Given your age, I'd estimate you could get away with about 1,600 calories for now, so if you eat 6 times a day, you're talking 270 calories per meal roughly.

Maybe so Lauren, but realistically if you're eating twice that, then it's almost certainly too much.

I'm not going ot sound preachy here, as I really admire what you're doing, and GOOD FOR YOU misses seriously, but you could be overloading your Kidneys with Protein, and long-term you'll get a lot of Fat with your Muscle gains eating as much as you claim.

Fact is, you're not someone who needs to eat double that figure I said right now.

You're 14, weigh 112, and if you do eat around 3,000 calories, it's potentially overkill for the body. You could bulk relatively easily with a good weights regime, eating roughly the calorie amount I said. Then every few months when you stall, add another 200-300 calories a day, to encourage some more growth, without a lot of Fat gains from any excess calories.

Right now you need to remember, that things like Kidneys are still developing, and I'd bet if you're eating double what I said, you'll be eating a lot of Protein, and may be heading for problems like Kidney Stones, or mild long-term damage, from overtaxing the Kidneys, with things like high Protein, possibly high Salt etc etc.

The possibility is, due to your training and possibly if your an Ectomorph body type, those factors will stop you getting really obese, off the daily calories you are claiming you eat, compared to being an Endomorph or Mesomorph who does little to no exercise, but eats that many calories.

So don't be too quick to seemingly dismiss the figure I gave you. If you were 21, that figure would have been around 500-600 calories higher than that anyway, then become higher over time.

If you eat way too many calories, and you don't need a lot of them, you'll store a lot of Fat with your Muscle, because the calories not needed will convert to Fat, and then you'll have difficulty shedding that Fat in the future.

Eating what you need for now, then adding sensible daily calorie increases, like the ones I mentioned before, every few months, will keep your growth relatively more Fat free.

Plus it will make it potentially easier to grow, if you're not getting as much Fat gain with your muscle mass, as you'll be leaner, and probably able to lift a bit more, without that extra Fat weight working against you.

As I say I really admire you, so I'm saying what I'm saying to help you, not spout off :).

We'll do what we can as a community to help you. So hopefully you'll stick around and let us yeah :).

i'll try to keep a track of what i eat and how many calories im taking in and see if i can run off of 1,600.

I used to be under weight (92lbs)and i was still eating alot but now i go the gym and ive gained 20lbs of muscle since september... i think i may be over eating because i really want to gain a bit more weight or at least not lose any.
thanks again :D

You won't have gained 20lbs of muscle. Even a women on Steroids probably couldn't dof that in 7 months.

More likely some muscle, some Fat and some Water. Especially if you drink more water because you exercise.

If the 1,600 is a bit low, and seems ot be not beneficial enough, then try 1,800, and personally I'd restrict protein to 20g max per meal right now, to go easy on the Kidneys, given your age.

Truth but she'S 14 ... when I was 14 I was taking many pounds in months only by sitting in classroom

and for the 20g protein per meal, good advice, not only for kidney but for optimal absorption @ 112lbs.
