Coming up with strength training program for dance?

Post by thunderseed »

Hey guys, i'm new here, name is Sabrina! I'm quite the athlete, but am overcoming an addiction to physical activity, thus had to put all sports and martial arts on the side for a long while, and just now trying to get back into a work out schedule, and figure out some healthy goals. Not going so well with the goal thing, as the only thing i can think of is passion for dance! There's not much in community for it, i just know i like doing it. I end up just dancing randomly around town on the streets, or at events. Of course street dance isn't popular here, people just think i'm weird.

So perhaps someone on here has an idea of what kind of exercises i should be doing for strengthening body for types of street dance, like hip hop or krump. I'm just so used to having goals, that i want to take this seriously, and commit to it. Yeah, so far dance is just a passion for me, as there are no dance battles, or even people who dance in community, but right now it's the only real goal i have. I'm awesome at dancing different forms, have learned many different styles of dance, but not good at following choreography, no short term memory, and things look backwards to me.
Perhaps any dancers could give me tips on how to learn choreography for people who have learning disabilities. Because i would love to join a class, or even find people, and have individuals to dance side by side with. But i tend to get right mixed up with left.

Just wondering what other dancers do in their workouts to keep in shape for dance. Yeah i know dance is a workout in itself, but you have to be really strong and fit in order to dance.

Also on the subject of dance, i want to learn how to overcome embarrassing fear of heights. I know someone could teach me how to breakdance, and do crazy flips and stunts, but that would be embarrassing for me since it truly scares the crap out of me (last summer i wouldn't even jump off a two foot ledge into the river)
and i need to start off easy, and overcome fear of it first. I don't even know how to do a cartwheel or a hand stand, which is embarrassing to admit. I don't know why it scares me so much. And i know i won't take myself seriously as a dancer unless i can defy gravity. I was just wondering if someone could give me any tips on how to get over that ridiculous fear, and how to begin? I also don't know much about flips, and breakdancing, and air stunts, so im not sure what parts of body i will need to strengthen for that. Any ideas?
And thanks!

Wow this is a good one. Okay for the strength training part do just that. Stress your body to increase your strength, this can be done by lunges to failure, single leg squats, pull ups and push ups to failure. If you have access to weights that will help.

If you have trouble learning choreography, repetition, repetition, repetition. Also lay off the sugar or other stimulants like caffeine. Good luck. http://gymsinsanantonio.com
